Mardi Gras arrives early this year on Tuesday, February 12, 2013. Mardi Gras is a staple of our festive Louisiana culture, but there is a reason why the Lake Charles Police Department has all officers on duty on this day: excess drinking and partying leads to stupid mistakes by a large number of people. This mistakes include various criminal charges including DWI, public intoxication, and criminal charges for disturbing the peace. Car crashes and personal injuries increase dramatically in Lake Charles during Mardi Gras as well.
Be safe. Mind your festive behavior and try not to be too excessive. Don’t drink and drive and risk a DWI. During the parade on Ryan Street in downtown Lake Charles, be mindful of your surroundings, especially if you bring your family. Never walk the parade alone, both for your own safety and in case you have too much to drink and do not want to risk driving while drunk. If you are feeling too drunk to drive and your friend cannot drive you, call a cab.
All in all, remember that this is a big party and we throw it to have fun. Just be careful that you don’t have too much fun and end up making a big mistake. Drinking in moderation and celebration is part of being from Louisiana, but driving drunk and getting a DWI is not. Have fun and be safe at Mardi Gras this year, whether it is in Lake Charles, Lafayette, Mamou, Baton Rouge, or the big New Orleans.
